Transferring data

Below are the steps for transferring data from one computer to another.

Very important: when copying a data file from one computer to another, always make sure you are replacing an older data file. You must always be aware of which data file is the latest, or definitive, one.

From one computer to another computer

  1. From your main computer, i.e. the one normally used for working with your database product.
  2. Close the product you are using.
  3. Open Windows Explorer: quickest way is to right-click on the Start button and select Explore.
  4. Go to the c:\DataFlow folder and copy the data file (labelled xxx_d.mdb) to your Flash drive, CD, etc.
  5. From your secondary computer, i.e. one you are transferring the data to.
  6. First make sure the product is also installed (see below) on this computer.
  7. Copy the same data file from your Flash drive, CD, etc. to the c:\DataFlow. Note: if the data file already exists, simply replace it.

From a network folder to another computer

  1. Notify eveyone else that you are transferring the database product to another location and they should not add or edit the data while you are updating it. They can continue to use the product though.
  2. Make sure no other users have the product open.
  3. Open Windows Explorer: quickest way is to right-click on the Start button and select Explore.
  4. Go to the shared folder and copy the data file (labelled xxx_d.mdb) to your Flash drive, CD, etc. If you are unsure where the data file is located, go to Updata data source (see below).
  5. From your secondary computer, i.e. one you are transferring the data to.
  6. First make sure the product is also installed (see below) on this computer.
  7. Copy the same data file from your Flash drive, CD, etc. to the c:\DataFlow. Note: if the data file already exists, simply replace it.

Tips

Working example: if you would like to transfer data from you main computer, or network folder, to a laptop simply follow the steps above. Once you have completed working on the laptop simply copy the data file from the laptop to the main computer, or network folder.
